Pleat Chair

The Pleat Chair explores the potential of a new material innovation by the Swedish company Papershell, which transforms layers of craft paper into a strong, durable composite using compression molding. In this project, I investigated how Papershell’s material could be used to design a side chair that challenges the dominance of plastic. The Pleat chair’s form is shaped by pleats inspired by paper that adds structural integrity. The design is lightweight and stackable. The chair’s pleats serve a dual purpose, acting as ribbing to reinforce the structure and, Secondly, It intentionally resembles the texture and form of origami, serving as a provocative and informative design element.
